Sustainable Design
"Green Design", "Earth Friendly", "Carbon Neutral", "Sustainable"...
There is much marketing hype these days about what is in essence a very simple concept: the considered and appropriate use of materials, energy, processes and technology in the creation of our built structures.
Gorman Architects has always adhered to the basic principle that a well built structure is inherently sustainable. By well-built, we mean one that minimizes the need for maintenance, uses energy efficiently, is adaptable to changing needs over its lifetime, is conducive to the occupant's health and engenders in the users of the building an enjoyment of its existence. A building that is useful and loved is one that is cared for and has a life span far surpassing those that are the result of thoughtless production systems.
Now, everyone is "Green" these days. Architects, engineers, contractors, suppliers and manufacturers all offer an array of goods and services furthering the promise of sustainability. Some approach sustainability with a messianic zeal irrespective of the cost or utility of the particular good or service promulgated. Others offer products or processes whose greeness is limited to the marketing brochure or name. Certification organizations such as the Green Building Council (LEED) and the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association (Earthcraft House) have brought a welcome measure of order and performance expectation to counter some of the unproven claims for various sustainability approaches.
Whether you want a building that obtains LEED or Earthcraft House certification, or you simply want a well built structure appropriate for your needs, Gorman Architects can help you achieve your goals.
Sustainability is changing how you think about building.
Residential Renewable Energy Tax Credit: 30% tax credit, with carryforward provisions, for installing solar electric generation, solar hot water heating, wind turbine generation, or geothermal heat pumps. There is no maximum limit to the tax credit. This is a significant incentive for installing renewable energy features in your existing home or one you are planning to build. The 30% credit dramatically reduces the payback period for your investments in renewable energy systems.
